S.B. Carleton scrapbook, 1879-1899.

Consisting of clippings from newspapers and magazines chronicling Carleton's career as founder and editor of the Pacific Town Talk, a society weekly (San Francisco), and founding editor of The Sentinel (later The Chronicle), the official magazine of the Knights and Ladies of Honor (a fraternal organization). Includes a series of eight articles, entitled "Our California letters," articles on Chinese immigrants in San Francisco, local politics, activities of Mayor Isaac Kalloch, and Carleton's obituary.

Born in Cumberland, Md., in 1867 Carleton joined the staff of the Denver Gazette, then the Cheyenne Star, and a gentile newspaper in Salt Lake City, eventually moving to Calif. In 1870 he moved to Brazil where he took a government job. He returned to Calif. in 1872, where he started Town Talk in San Francisco in 1892. He was active in many fraternal organizations.
